Slentrol

What does it look like?

Slentrol comes as a liquid which is given once daily as part of a weight reduction programme. It has to be prescribed in the first place by a qualified vet and then the dose has to be adjusted thereafter according to the results of monthly weight checks. (These are often done by a veterinary nurse.)

Slentrol is not recommended for use in all dogs. Growing or pregnant dogs are best not treated, and those with underlying liver disease or hormone abnormalities might not be suitable. Slentrol is intended for use in dogs only.

How does it work?

Slentrol works mostly by helping to switch off a dog’s appetite. This means that when a dog being treated with Slentrol has some food, it tends to feel “full” more quickly. However this effect is mild and simply giving the drug will not make dogs magically lose weight. It has to be used as part of a complete programme designed to reduce weight. Dogs on treatment will tend to beg less for food; they will not expect quite so much to eat. However many dogs are enormously greedy and might still eat excessive amounts given the chance. Most owners actually enjoy seeing their dogs eat well and find it difficult to restrict food. It is very important therefore that everyone involved with feeding the dog takes the matter seriously and does their bit to help. The less hungry the dog is, the easier it is to get him or her to eat less. In this way Slentrol really can help. Most dogs lose weight slowly and steadily over a period of several months. Ideally the aim is to lose 3% of body weight per month for up to a year. After that the dog (and owner) should have adjusted to new feeding habits, and a healthier body weight can be maintained.

It is important of course to encourage sensible, regular exercise. Most dogs which lose some weight do find it easier to move about and so become happier to take exercise. This makes it easier, but it is important to provide the opportunity for a walks regularly, twice a day if possible. But then most of us with overweight dogs could probably lose a pound or two ourselves. It is not just Fido who can benefit from extra walks!

Are there any side effects?

As long as dogs under treatment have been checked first by a vet, Slentrol is very safe. However a lot of dogs will vomit once or twice during the first few weeks of treatment, and some will get mild diarrhoea. These effects tend to pass quite soon and are not usually a cause for concern. Some dogs might noticeably be less keen to eat. This is of course exactly the effect we are hoping to see, but some owners might not be happy about it. Normally a good appetite is seen as a sign of good health, so being less keen to eat might appear to be a sign of ill-health. This effect should be mild and is actually beneficial, but if there is any doubt then another visit to the vet is a sensible plan.

Is it all worth it?

There is no doubt that a dog of ideal bodyweight is generally happier and healthier than a tubby one. On average, leaner dogs are likely to live slightly longer, be more active and playful, especially in later life, and be less prone to a variety of medical problems. Using Slentrol really can make a difference for those dogs which need to lose weight. Huge amounts of money are spent on arthritis treatments in older dogs. It is likely that for lots of these dogs, losing weight would be of greater benefit than arthritis drugs. For younger dogs, losing weight now might save them from ever needing arthritis treatments. It is becoming widely recognised that the risks of all sorts of diseases are increased through being overweight – in dogs and in people. This does not of course mean that any of the diseases is inevitable, just that it is more likely. But leaving that aside, being slim and fit makes it easier to have a happy and fulfilling life. It is not always easy, but it is something worth aiming for.

Where to get Slentrol

Slentrol can be supplied by your local vet. This might be the most expensive way, but it is easy. However Slentrol is not a cheap drug and can be supplied legally online by places such as VioVet. Many people use online suppliers these days to help with the costs of medication. It must first be prescribed by the vet who is directly responsible for the care of the dog in question. This means that a vet must assess the dog’s condition and then decide, in conjunction with the owner, what treatment is most appropriate. If the decision is to use Slentrol, then the vet is legally obliged to provide a written, signed prescription on request and without any further charge being made (in the United Kingdom). This can then be forwarded to an internet pharmacy such as VioVet so that the drug can be supplied.

(VioVet use exactly the same Slentrol as your local vet but are able to supply it more cheaply.)
